Dorohoi

Dorohoi is a city in the Botoşani County, Romania, on the right bank of the river Jijia, which broadens into a lake on the north.
Dorohoi used to be a market for the timber and farm produce of the north Moldavian highlands; merchants from the neighboring states flocked to its great fair, held on the June 12. The settlement is first mentioned in documents from 1408, where a treaty was signed between Moldavian voievode, Alexandru cel Bun, and Polish King, Ladislaus III. This suggests that the role of Dorohoi as a commercial center existed long before the founding of the Moldavian state.
Dorohoi used to be the capital of the Dorohoi county, but was degraded to a municipality when Romania lost Northern Bucovina to Soviet Union during World War II.
In the city there is a church built by Ştefan cel Mare.

Dorohoi in the Holocaust
Approximately 800,000 Jews were living in Greater Rumania before the war. According to the last official census on December 19, 1930, there were 756,930 people. More than one third of these (314,933) lived in the counties of Bessarabia, Bucovina and Dorohoi.
The racially based census taken on May 20, 1942 indicated that only 19,576 Jews were living in these counties. However, in the so-called "Transnistrian" camps and ghettos about 60,000 people were alive at this time.
The first murders were committed in Mihoreni (Dorohoi county) by a military unit under the command of a major named Gilav. For no apparent reason, the soldiers arrested and tortured Sloime Weiner, his son, User Weiner, his daughters, Roza Weiner and Fani Zekler (the latter was holding a two-year-old child in her arms). They were taken to a forest called Tureatca, where a lame cobbler, Moscovici, his wife and two children, as well as Isac Moscovici's wife and two daughters were also found. All of them were lined up at the edge of a hole and shot into it. Isac Moscovici, who had been arrested separately, was so severely beaten that he died on the way to hospital.

The Story about the survivor - Yehudit Freedman

Yehudit was born in Romania in the town of Dorohoi and grow up in an orphanage.
After she was born she and her family moved to Bucharest. She remembers there was an earthquake and she remembers the place of birth of her grandmother in the east of Romania.

Before World War Two as a little girl she went to a Jewish school to learn the Hebrew alphabet. She learnt Romanian and a lot of Hebrew poetry.

Her father, Shemuel Freedman, was a hard worker, and they were a happy family. Her mother, Rachel, took them to lots of trips because they lived in a central location. Her mother didn't have a job (it wasn't acceptable), but due to her father's occupation as a butcher, the family lived well. Both of her brothers, Mathias and Haim, died from a disease. Her aunt and her grandmother died in Bucharest before their time.

She started working at the age of 7 and a half in the fields, growing sunflowers. She pulled the seeds out of the sunflowers, and in exchange she recieved a peace of bread (50 g) and a soup full with water and worms. From The war she can't remember a lot only that she was inside the orphanage and worked in the fields.

Her journey to Israel began in the ship Struma. The ship was probably not appropriate to this kind of journey, because it sank in front of the Turkish shores. In addition, on the ship there was a bomb, but it didn't explode. After this incident, the passengers were carried into small boats to the city of Istanbul, Turkey. They arrived to Israel by a train that went through Syria.

She started her life in Israel with her aunt (from her father side, Freedman) in a Kibbutz, Beit Lid. Afterwards, her aunt died.
In their home they lived poorly. They slept in folded beds and ate a small piece of bread with a little margarine, an orange and a cup of tea for breakfast. After one month, they left Beit Lid and moved to Givat Haim, to her brother Yossi's Freedman home.

Her aunt transferred them to their new home because she was a Kibbutz member. Yehudit was born to a religious home. Therefore she was mocked by a lot of students in school, that occasionally beat her. She went through many hard times like the war and the poor food times she was in, but eventually she improved her life and had children.
